Introduced on the Quebec annual flower market around ten years ago, this plant is becoming better known as a condiment. Fresh or dried edible leaves, flowers and flower buds are highly prized in Southeast Asia. Their spicy peppery flavor is accompanied by an analgesic effect which has earned it the English name Toothache Plant. It is also known under the names of brede mafane, Para watercress, Peek-a-boo and Electric Daisy.
Many consider Brazilian watercress to be an exceptional medicinal plant. This is widely used in herbalism to treat various pathologies. The latter actually has compounds such as spilanthol, coumarins, flavonoids, terpenoids and polysaccharides, which give it varied therapeutic properties, including antimalarial, analgesic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and stimulating the nervous system.
The slightly spreading plant grows to 15 to 30 cm in height. Its curious conical flowers devoid of petals form an entirely yellow cone. The more or less oval leaves are dark green. The seed needs light to germinate.
