Purple shiso, also known as red perilla, is an aromatic plant widely used in the Far East. It is also the purple shiso which is used to give the beautiful pink color of pickled ginger. Its leaves with their frankly intoxicating scent go well with mint, coriander and basil. In addition to being a beautiful ornamental plant, purple shiso is renowned for its many medicinal properties. All its parts, from leaves to seeds, are used. Traditionally, purple shiso is used in multiple treatments including nausea, abdominal pain and even colds.

Like basil, it can be grown easily and in much the same way. The leaves of the purple shiso plant can be brewed to create a delicious cold drink, which has quickly become a favorite among our team at the ecoumene. Please note, however, that this infusion is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
