Seeds grown in an ecological and responsible manner by Akène, forest culture

Heliopsis helianthoides is a perennial plant native to North America, often found along forest edges, in clearings and meadows. This robust ornamental plant can reach a height of 1,25 metres, and its bright yellow flowers are very abundant, adding a lively touch to gardens. With its deep and fibrous roots, it is ideal for stabilizing soils and preventing erosion, particularly in naturalistic developments in Quebec. Heliopsis attracts many butterflies, pollinators and birds, and it is often used as an auxiliary plant in vegetable gardens: it acts as a trap plant by attracting aphids, thus diverting them from other nearby vegetable crops.

Medicinal and culinary uses
The roots of the plant are traditionally used for their astringent and antiseptic properties. A decoction of the roots is used to treat respiratory ailments such as colds and coughs, as well as to relieve sore throats. The roots are also said to soothe toothache when chewed.

Ecological roles
Heliopsis false sunflower plays a significant ecological role in supporting local wildlife. It attracts a variety of butterflies, pollinators and birds, which rely on its flowers for food and reproduction. Its roots also help stabilise soils, particularly in areas prone to erosion, and its ability to attract aphids makes it an ideal trap plant for vegetable gardens, protecting other crops in the area. This makes this perennial an excellent choice for naturalistic gardens and riparian strips, contributing to biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Heliopsis seeds must undergo a cold lamination to ensure their germination.

Description

Sowing and cultivation

For heliopsis seeds to germinate, cold stratification is necessary. Simply mix one volume of seeds in 3 volumes of damp vermiculite, a mixture that will be placed in an airtight bag in the fridge for approximately 30 days.

Once stratified, the seeds can be sown in place in the garden.

You can also sow directly in place in the fall, stratification will then take place naturally outside, but the germination rate may be reduced.
