Seeds grown in an ecological and responsible manner by Akène, forest culture
Wood sage (Salvia nemorosa) is a vigorous, compact perennial known for its long, generous blooms. It produces beautiful spikes of purple flowers that rise above oval, serrated, aromatic foliage. This plant adds a splash of sustained color to the garden from late spring to late summer. Suitable for naturalistic gardens, it prefers sunny locations and well-drained soils, and is drought tolerant once established.
Medicinal and culinary uses
Wood sage has astringent and slightly stimulating properties. Although less used than common sage, it can be used as an infusion to help soothe mild inflammations of the throat and to aid digestion. Its aromatic foliage can also be added in small quantities to dishes to enhance the flavor.
Ecological roles
Wood sage is particularly popular with pollinators, attracting bees, butterflies and other insects throughout the summer with its abundant nectar. Its prolonged flowering provides a stable resource for pollinating wildlife. Growing wood sage in eco-gardens or flowerbeds promotes biodiversity while adding color and seasonal interest.
