History

In 1907, Maximilienne Corbeil Dinel received as a wedding gift a bag of beans that she called “her rowers”. She immediately adopted them and was still growing them at the age of 94. It was her granddaughter Judith David who contacted the Jardins de l'écoumène in 2008 with the hope of entrusting us with her grandmother's precious seeds so that they would not be forgotten! With the help of the Potagers d'antan team, research was undertaken to identify this bean, or at least find its origins, but has still not yielded conclusive results. This is why he wears Grandma Dinel's in honor of the one who preserved them all these years!

Features

This climbing or trailing bean flowers until frost ensuring uninterrupted production all season long. The long, flattened yellow beans contain grains that expand quickly. We therefore harvest them just before they are completely yellow, otherwise they take on a pasty texture. Mrs. Dinel used to serve her cooked beans with a little butter, salt and pepper, but she also made preserves.

Culture

Our skilled gardener has grown her beans in hardiness zone 4 in Chénéville in Outaouais for many decades following this method:

  • Choice of a sunny, well-drained site;
  • Adding compost to the naturally clayey soil of your vegetable garden;
  • Sowing outside the vegetable garden towards the end of May, once the risk of frost has passed.

They can be sown in rows and stretched ropes or netting along the length of the row to give them something to climb on. They can also be sown in pockets at the foot of a 1,8 m pole ending in a cross and stretching wires towards the ground. The stems will reach the cross in no time!

Number of days for harvest: 45

Available at the ecoumene only
