Orchard Baby Corn – Organic

zea mays

4.49$

After only 65 days of cultivation, this very early maturing dwarf corn produces ears with deliciously sweet yellow kernels.

This compact variety was bred in Canada by a man named Orchard, then introduced to the market in 1947 by Oscar H. Will & Company of North Dakota. However, it was lost for a long time after the seed company closed in 1959.

The plants, 90-150 cm high, each produce two ears 10-15 cm long made up of 8 to 10 rows of tender, tasty grains, not floury at all and not too sweet unlike some more recent varieties. Lateral stems often develop and in turn produce additional, but smaller, ears. It is the ideal candidate for small urban or container gardens and gardeners in northern regions with a very short growing season.

If you are growing it in a container, plant several plants together in a large container to ensure better pollination.
