Deer Tongue Leaf Lettuce – Organic

Lactuca sativa var. crispa

4.49$

Originally from the United States, this very old variety was already making waves around 1740. It is also known under the names Deer Tongue and Matchless, but it should not be confused with the Amish Deer Tongue variety which made its mark appearance a century later.

Different seed sources do not agree on its classification. It is a unique lettuce in many ways, firstly because of its unusual, glossy green leaves, which are triangular and curved downward. These leaves have a delicious nutty flavor that never turns bitter and a soft, crunchy texture reminiscent of butter lettuce. However, the plant does not form a beautiful round apple, but something like a small firm apple, tall and elongated, rather inconspicuous, and thickly ribbed leaves, which more closely resemble romaine lettuce. However, you can pick its leaves gradually to see them grow back, like leaf lettuce. Result: we find it classified haphazardly with butter-type head lettuces, romaine lettuces and leaf lettuces! As for us, we opted for the latter group because Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, identifies it as a leaf lettuce. As this university has had a vegetable breeding program for a very long time, we hope to be able to trust it!

Very resistant to heat, it goes to seed very late in the season and displays excellent resistance to cold. It can therefore be cultivated from spring to fall.

Number of days for harvest: Young leaves: 28 | Mature leaves: 45

Available at the ecoumene only
