We owe this excellent variety to the seed company Vilmorin who introduced it in 1771. The synonyms queen's lettuce and lentil lettuce are cited in “Les Plantes Potagères” by Vilmorin-Andrieux in 1883, and probably before. In this work, it is also described under the name “spinach lettuce”, “oak leaf lettuce” being one of the synonyms. This last name has stood the test of time better than the others!
This true grandmother produces beautiful, deeply lobed green leaves like oak leaves, whose flavor is remarkably mild. The dense rosette is made up of countless rather long leaves, of a beautiful bright green. These grow back very well after being cut. In addition to being delicious in salads, oak leaf lettuce demonstrates exceptional qualities when braised or stewed.
Very tolerant of cold, it is also distinguished by superior resistance to insects and diseases. It even seems that rabbits don't touch it! In addition, it is very slow to go to seed and can be grown all summer.
Number of days for harvest: Young leaves: 28 | Mature leaves: 50
