In 1856, Vilmorin-Andrieux designated oak leaf (green) and artichoke leaf (red) lettuces as “romaine”. Its description read: “Lousy apple. Very numerous radical leaves, 30 cm long, cut into very elongated lobes, pointed at the top, brown-green marked with a few brown spots, erect, arranged in a bundle and forming a well-filled heart. » In 1883, a sentence about it accompanied the description of oak leaf lettuce: “Artichoke leaf lettuce is still sometimes cultivated, which is very similar to this one and only differs from it in that it is the brown tint of its foliage. »
Fortunately, this excellent lettuce did not sink into total oblivion and has eventually come back into fashion! Like the green-leaved variety, it is very resistant to bolting which occurs late in autumn. The very decorative tender leaves are produced in abundance. The cut leaves keep very well and are harvested when they measure 15 cm. By leaving the heart in place, you will be entitled to several regrowths during the season.
Number of days for harvest: Young leaves: 28 | Mature leaves: 55
