Balbis Nightshade – Organic

Solanum sisymbriifolium

4.49$
2.25$

This curious plant is often grown as an ornamental, as it produces beautiful large white to lilac flowers that resemble those of eggplant. The flowers are followed by small red fruits with yellow flesh, 1,5 to 3 cm in diameter, whose sweet, slightly tangy taste has aromas of lychee. In zone 4, the fruits are ripe towards the end of August. They develop in a spiny covering which opens of its own accord when the fruit is ripe, making harvesting easier. Moreover, gloves and pruning shears are recommended for harvesting because the entire plant is covered with thorns. This nightshade grows to a height of 1,4 m and is grown like a tomato, without the need for pruning. Very slow germination. This plant is sometimes used as a trap crop or companion crop to protect potatoes from potato cyst nematode. Balbis nightshade triggers the hatching of cysts but makes it impossible for nematodes to migrate into the roots, leading to their death and thus greatly reducing populations.
