Once known as Barbabietola de Bassano, this unique beet became known as Barbabietola de Chioggia or beet from Chioggia, an Italian town south of Venice. The original Bassano, introduced in 1841, is said to have been flatter at the top and had a less pronounced red skin. This heritage seed was enhanced by Washington State seed company Alf Christianson Seed Company to accentuate its unique characteristics. Indeed, this beet produces a magnificent purple-red root that is spectacular when cut in half, as it has alternating purple and white rings. Thanks to a particularly sweet taste, it is popular raw or briefly steamed. The leaves are short and attractive.
