Vegetable story: the Algonquian “false pumpkin”
This pumpkin that we love so much does not meet the common characteristics of its type.

Around the 1870s, a pumpkin mutation with scaleless seeds was discovered. These seeds, when pressed, yield a dark green oil, thicker than that extracted from pumpkin seeds with shell. With a generous taste, this oil is also richer in nutrients and antioxidants. Styrian was selected in the Styria region of Austria where the ideal conditions for growing this type of pumpkin are found. The fruits contain light yellow flesh and abundant green seeds for which the region is famous! The harvest takes place when the small green pumpkins have a little orange streaks. The fruits are then left in the shade for 2 weeks before extracting the seeds. The seeds are then simply rinsed briefly with water and left to dry in a dark, permanently ventilated place. They must be perfectly dry before storage.
The absence of scale makes the seeds more vulnerable, hence the importance of storing them properly before being able to sow them. To facilitate germination, the seeds are first placed in a damp cloth at a temperature of 25°C. As soon as the germ appears, we put the seed in the ground, in a pot or directly in the garden in well-warmed soil.
