This naturalized species from Eurasia in the Quebec region and elsewhere is very popular in ornamental horticulture as a ground cover between paving stones and in rock gardens. Hardy in zone 3, wild thyme grows in poor, dry soil, in full sun where it forms very low clumps 50 cm wide. In cooking, its slightly lemony and menthol scent is both more intense and more refined than that of common thyme. It is also very popular with many chefs. Also known under the names red thyme, bastard thyme, wild thyme or chiffchaff, wild thyme is a medicinal plant most often served as an infusion to treat colds, sinusitis, coughs and flu. It also helps with digestion.
