Yarrow is a perennial plant that takes its name from the famous Achilles of Greek mythology. He would have used it to treat the wounds of soldiers during the Trojan War. The “millefeuille” precision comes, for its part, from the appearance of its foliage which gives the impression that each leaf is made up of a thousand leaves. Finally, its common name is clear! We gave it to the turkeys to peck at, who must have really liked it. It is a plant imported a long time ago from Europe and which has become naturalized in our territory.
The flowers of yarrow are flower heads grouped in a rather flat corymb measuring 5 to 10 cm in diameter. Each flower head is made up of white (or pinkish) ray flowers and it brings together florets or tubular flowers, also white. The abundance of its flowering attracts pollinating insects.
Yarrows are easily recognized by their very characteristic alternate leaves without petioles because they are divided into multiple fine segments. The flowers are carried high on erect stems covered with fine woolly-looking hairs which form some branching branches at their ends. They can reach around 70 cm in height. Yarrow is ideal for very sunny locations. Oddly enough, it prefers poorer, drier soil conditions. This explains why we see it thriving in urban areas that are practically unsuitable for cultivation.
